Ø47 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø47 mm twist drill is an industrial NWKc cutting tool designed for drilling large-diameter holes in structural and alloy steels. The Morse taper shank provides rigid, self-holding mounting in the spindle — without the risk of slipping at maximum cutting torque. The Ø47 Morse taper drill is suitable for pillar and box-column drilling machines used in industrial facilities.

Key benefits of the Ø47 mm metal drill bit

  • HSS high-speed steel — enables stable cutting of materials with tensile strengths up to 800 MPa without loss of cutting edge hardness
  • Self-holding Morse taper shank — eliminates tool slippage and transmits full torque directly to the cutting edges
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • General-purpose cutting geometry with a 118° point angle — suitable for structural, low-alloy, and medium-carbon steels, gray cast iron, and aluminum
  • Repeatable hole size within tolerance class h8 — precision manufacturing ensures consistent dimensions in batch and single-part production
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — using coolant increases cutting edge life by up to 2.5 times compared with dry drilling

The Ø47 mm twist drill is used in structural steel fabrication plants, maintenance departments, and industrial machinery service shops. It is suitable for drilling mounting holes in foundation plates, pipe flanges, and machine housings requiring precise fits. It normally produces holes within tolerance class H12 (Ø47.000–Ø47.250 mm range); holes requiring an H7 fit need additional reaming with a finishing reamer.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 141 mm (3ר47), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Material compatibility of the Ø47 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø47 mm drill bit

The Ø47 mm NWKc drill has a Morse taper shank ending in a tang (wedge), which prevents rotation in the sleeve and makes it easier to eject the drill from the spindle. The NWKa type has a smooth taper without a tang — it is used less frequently, mainly on older machines.

The most commonly used reduction sleeve for the Ø47 MT4 Morse taper drill is MT4→MT5 (for drilling machines with an MT5 spindle). MT4→MT3 sleeves are also available. Use an appropriately sized drill drift to remove the drill from the sleeve.

For a Ø47 mm drill in structural steel with a tensile strength up to 900 N/mm², the recommended cutting speed Vc is 12–20 m/min, corresponding to approximately 81 rpm. Feed: 0.32 mm/rev, feed rate: 26 mm/min. Use peck drilling at depths greater than 3×D.
