Ø7.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø7.25 mm twist drill with an MT1 Morse taper achieves higher hole accuracy than comparable straight-shank drills — direct mounting in the spindle shortens the torque transmission path and reduces radial runout. The tool is designed for stationary drilling machines: pillar machines, bench machines with an MT1 spindle, and box-column machines. The Ø7.25 Morse taper drill with a flute length of 69 mm is sufficient for holes in sheet metal and sections of typical shop thicknesses.

Key benefits of the Ø7.25 mm metal drill bit

  • Eliminates the drill chuck — the MT1 taper seated directly in the spindle shortens the torque transmission path and reduces radial tool runout
  • Heat resistance up to 600°C — the high-speed steel cutting edge retains its working hardness even at higher cutting speeds in soft and medium-hard steels
  • Interchangeability to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions across manufacturers allow drill replacement without calibrating the spindle axis
  • Short design (l1 = 150 mm) — reduced tool overhang provides greater rigidity and a better hole surface finish than extended-length drills
  • Holes for locating pins and bushings — the h8 tolerance grade provides a repeatable preliminary size before finish reaming to an H7 fit
  • Low operating cost — can be resharpened repeatedly on a tool grinder without losing cutting geometry while maintaining the 118° angle

The Ø7.25 Morse taper drill bit is most often selected for mounting holes in hollow sections, thick plates, and machine components. In toolrooms, it is used to prepare preliminary holes before reaming to a dowel pin fit. Holes are produced to tolerance class H12 (Ø7.250–Ø7.400 mm); if class H7 is required, additional reaming is necessary.

Checking radial runout

Before drilling with the Ø7.25 mm drill, check radial runout in the spindle — the maximum permissible value is 0.02 mm. Excessive runout reduces hole quality and accelerates cutting edge wear. The taper and spindle socket must be clean and dry.

Material compatibility of the Ø7.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø7.25 mm drill bit

The Ø7.25 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 69 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 67 mm.
