Ø12.3 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø12.3 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT1 taper is designed for precision drilling in structural steels on pillar drilling machines. The Morse taper shank provides secure, self-holding seating in the spindle — eliminating the risk of the tool slipping rotationally under increased cutting torque. With a flute length of 101 mm, the Ø12.3 Morse taper drill allows through holes to be drilled in typical shop sections and sheet metal.

Key benefits of the Ø12.3 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
  • DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
  • Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
  • Overall length of 182 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
  • Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks

The Ø12.3 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø12.300–Ø12.480 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Drilling blind holes

When drilling blind holes with the Ø12.3 mm drill, allow for the drill point cone — the usable depth is approximately 4 mm less than the set depth. For holes deeper than 36 mm (3×D), retract the drill every 18 mm to clear chips from the flutes.

Material compatibility of the Ø12.3 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø12.3 mm drill bit

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 101 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 4 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 97 mm.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
