It is important to remember to supply coolant to the cutting area - this will maintain the durability and performance of the equipment, even at high cutting parameters. 3D folding drills are used for drilling various types of holes in uniform workpiece materials, machining carbon steels, stainless steels, alloy steels, various types of cast irons, non-ferrous metals or titanium alloys.
To achieve maximum machining efficiency and proper operation of the equipment, it is important to remember about the appropriate pressure of the fluid supplied to the cutting zone and to ensure optimum rigidity of the machine tool - chuck - workpiece - tool system.

Design of folding drills

The adopted design solutions for drill bits with straight chip grooves, depending on the type of drill, are based on the use of multi-shot inserts fixed to the body with a "TORX" type screw:

WCMT or WCMX (external inserts)
SPMT or SPGT (inner inserts) Expected drilling length from l=2D to l1=4D (2D=diameter*2 ; 3D=diameter*3 etc...)

The drill has holes for supplying coolant to the cutting zone. This process is carried out through the hole in the shank part and the machine tool spindle, or through a standardized rotary ring bypassing the spindle. The shank part is a cylindrical shank of the "WELDON" type.

Application of folding drills

Folding drills with carbide blades are recommended for efficient drilling of holes in various types of uniform workpiece materials (excluding sheet metal packages). Drilling lengths up to 4D. The presented drills can be used for machining carbon, alloy and stainless steels, cast irons of various types, titanium alloys and non-ferrous metals. An important factor, which determines the proper operation of the drills, is to ensure a sufficiently high pressure of the fluid supplied to the cutting zone - on the order of 0.3÷0.5 MPa, as well as a capacity of Q=15÷25 dcm 3 /min,. Effective benefits from the use of folding drills can be obtained by ensuring sufficiently high rigidity of the machine tool - chuck - workpiece - tool system.
