Ø75 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5

Product description and key benefits

The Ø75 mm twist drill with an MT5 taper is a specialized tool — diameters above 50 mm require machine tools with at least 4 kW of power and a rigid box-column construction. At Ø75, the transverse chisel edge generates a significant portion of the axial force — a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is essential for safe operation. The Ø75 Morse taper drill transmits full torque thanks to its MT5 taper with a diameter of 44.40 mm.

Key benefits of the Ø75 mm metal drill bit

  • MT5 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 447 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 260 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 32 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT4 to MT6 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø75 Morse taper drill is designed for specialized drilling operations in heavy machinery plants and shipyards. For diameters in the MT5 range, every operation requires planning — from the pilot hole to the selection of cutting parameters. H12 tolerance holes, Ø75.000–Ø75.300 mm; fits are achieved by boring.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø75 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket
✓ MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Mandatory pilot drilling

The Ø75 mm drill should not be used without a pilot hole. Drill a pilot hole using a Ø20–25 mm drill — this reduces axial force by 40–50% and eliminates engagement of the chisel edge responsible for vibration. At depths greater than 150 mm (2×D), use peck drilling with retraction every 30–40 mm and ample coolant (min. 8% emulsion, 8 l/min).

Material compatibility of the Ø75 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø75 mm drill bit

Yes — gray cast iron (GG20–GG30) and ductile cast iron (GGG40) are well suited to HSS drills. Short, brittle chips are easier to evacuate from the flutes than steel chips. Dry drilling with a compressed air blast is possible.

H12 tolerance as standard. Reaming or boring is required for H7 or tighter fits — a twist drill cannot achieve these tolerances without finishing.

At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 187 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.
