Ø13.2 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø13.2 mm NWKc twist drill is distinguished by its mounting method — the MT1 Morse taper eliminates the intermediate component between the tool and the spindle. This results in lower radial runout and improved repeatability of hole dimensions. The Ø13.2 Morse taper drill with a high-speed steel (HSS) cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C, allowing drilling without the risk of tempering the cutting edge.

Key benefits of the Ø13.2 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 101 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 91 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø13.2 mm Morse taper drill is used in metalworking shops for bolt and dowel holes in steel components. In batch production, it provides repeatable dimensional accuracy within tolerance class H12 (Ø13.200–Ø13.380 mm). H7 fits require finish reaming.

Coolant for drilling steel

The Ø13.2 mm HSS drill requires cooling with a 5–8% emulsion when drilling structural steels. Dry drilling reduces cutting edge life by 50–70% and reduces hole surface quality. Minimum coolant flow: 2 l/min.

Material compatibility of the Ø13.2 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø13.2 mm drill bit

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 101 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 4 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 97 mm.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
