Ø92 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT6

Product description and key benefits

The Ø92 mm metal drill bit with an MT6 Morse taper is a tool at the upper end of the diameter range — the MT6 taper with a diameter of 63.35 mm is the largest standard size in the Morse taper system. At Ø92, cutting forces require a heavy-duty machine tool: a radial drilling machine or boring machine with a power rating above 7 kW. The Ø92 Morse taper drill bit should not be used without a pilot hole — at this diameter, the chisel edge generates an axial force exceeding 20 kN.

Key benefits of the Ø92 mm metal drill bit

  • MT6 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 530 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 280 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 35 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT5 to MT6 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø92 mm Morse taper drill bit is used in plants equipped with heavy machine tools — radial drilling machines with an arm length of 1200+ mm and boring machines with an MT6 Morse taper spindle. Applications include holes in turbine, rolling mill, and press components. Tolerance grade H12, Ø92.000–Ø92.350 mm.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø92 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT6 → MT5 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT6 → MT4 — not recommended (socket significantly undersized for the load)
✓ MT6 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Pressurized coolant is mandatory

At a diameter of 92 mm, drilling without pressurized coolant is not permitted. Minimum coolant system flow rate: 10 l/min, emulsion concentration 8–10%. Lack of cooling leads to cutting-edge overheating, hardening of the material in the cutting zone, and drill breakage.

Material compatibility of the Ø92 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø92 mm drill bit

At least two: 1) a Ø25–30 mm pilot hole, 2) the final Ø92 mm drill bit. For diameters above 90 mm, consider three stages: pilot Ø25 → intermediate Ø50 → final Ø92 mm.

Pressurized coolant is mandatory: emulsion concentration 8–10%, minimum flow rate 10 l/min. Lack of cooling leads to cutting-edge overheating, hardening of the cutting zone, and tool breakage.

Yes — an HSSE drill bit with the same dimensions (DIN 345) is a 1:1 replacement. The difference: HSSE with 5% cobalt better withstands the temperatures encountered during prolonged large-diameter drilling. When machining only carbon steels, the difference is small.
