Ø30.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø30.5 mm metal drill bit with an MT3 taper shank to DIN 345 is a tool used under heavy-duty machining conditions on box-column and radial drill presses. Type N flute geometry balances chip evacuation and drill core rigidity. The Ø30.5 Morse taper drill bit is selected by machine builders, repair facilities, and steel fabrication plants.

Key benefits of the Ø30.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Self-holding taper shank — MT3 transmits full torque to the cutting edges without intermediate components
  • HSS with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — stable cutting of materials with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² without loss of sharpness
  • Overall length of 301 mm — proportional to the drilling diameter — provides a balance between reach and rigidity
  • General-purpose 118° geometry — suitable for most materials encountered in shop machining
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT2 to MT4 spindles using reduction sleeves
  • Repeated resharpening — HSS steel allows the cutting edge to be restored without loss of cutting properties

The Ø30.5 Morse taper drill is used mainly in steel construction — industrial buildings, bridges, and viaducts — where holes with diameters of 23–31 mm are standard for assembly connections. In repair shops, it is used to restore holes in machinery. H12 tolerance (Ø30.500–Ø30.750 mm); H7 fits are achieved with a reamer.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 30.5 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 61 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø30.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø30.5 mm drill bit

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.
