Ø54 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5

Product description and key benefits

The Ø54 mm NWKc metal drill bit with an MT5 Morse taper is a tool used exclusively on heavy stationary machine tools — in the 51–76 mm diameter range. Neither a magnetic drill nor a benchtop drill press provides sufficient rigidity or power. The Ø54 Morse taper drill bit requires two-stage drilling (pilot + final diameter), which eliminates vibration generated by the chisel edge measuring several millimeters in length.

Key benefits of the Ø54 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT5 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 230 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 220 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø54 mm Morse taper drill is used in heavy machinery manufacturing to produce holes in castings, machine bodies, and thick plates. In shipyards, it is used to machine hull components and hatch cover mechanisms. H12 tolerance (Ø54.000–Ø54.300 mm); more precise holes require boring.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø54 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket
✓ MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Minimum machine power for diameters of 50+ mm

The Ø54 mm drill requires a machine with a power rating above 4 kW and an MT5 or larger spindle. Torque when drilling S355 steel reaches 108 Nm — pillar drilling machines rated below 3 kW will not provide stable cutting conditions.

Material compatibility of the Ø54 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø54 mm drill bit

Yes — gray cast iron (GG20–GG30) and ductile cast iron (GGG40) are well suited to HSS drills. Short, brittle chips are easier to evacuate from the flutes than steel chips. Dry drilling with a compressed air blast is possible.

H12 tolerance as standard. Reaming or boring is required for H7 or tighter fits — a twist drill cannot achieve these tolerances without finishing.

At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 135 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.
