Ø16.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT2
Product description and key benefits
The Ø16.5 mm twist drill with an MT2 shank offers a significant advantage over straight-shank drills: mounting stability increases with load. The self-holding Morse taper seats deeper in the spindle in proportion to the cutting torque. At a diameter of 16.5 mm, the Ø16.5 Morse taper drill provides vibration-free operation and uniform cutting edge wear even during intensive use.
Key benefits of the Ø16.5 mm metal drill bit
- MT2 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
- HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
- Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
- Compact 223 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
- Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 125 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 15 mm
- Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT1 to MT3 spindles using reduction sleeves
The Ø16.5 mm Morse taper drill is chosen for holes for bolted joints in machine components and steel structures. Maintenance departments use it to restore worn holes and drill new ones during assembly. Holes within tolerance class H12 (Ø16.500–Ø16.680 mm); tighter fits are achieved with a reamer.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)
When drilling holes deeper than 49 mm (3ר16.5), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø16.5 mm drill bit
It depends on the specific bolted joint. For metric coarse-thread bolts, the clearance hole diameter according to ISO 273 is 0.5–1 mm larger than the nominal thread diameter.
Use cooling with a 5–8% emulsion, do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters, and resharpen the tool before it becomes completely dull. Clean taper and spindle socket surfaces reduce runout — the main cause of accelerated wear.
In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on uneven or inclined surfaces, where the drill may slip away from the marked point.
