Ø63 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5

Product description and key benefits

The Ø63 mm metal drill bit with an MT5 Morse taper shank to DIN 345 is designed for holes that cannot be made with hole saws because of the required drilling depth. A hole saw works to a depth of 30–50 mm, while the Ø63 twist drill reaches 245 mm. The Ø63 Morse taper drill bit is the only option for drilling into solid material in thick foundation plates and housing castings.

Key benefits of the Ø63 mm metal drill bit

  • Self-holding taper shank — MT5 transmits full torque to the cutting edges without intermediate components
  • HSS with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — stable cutting of materials with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² without loss of sharpness
  • Overall length of 432 mm — proportional to the drilling diameter — provides a balance between reach and rigidity
  • General-purpose 118° geometry — suitable for most materials encountered in shop machining
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT4 to MT6 spindles using reduction sleeves
  • Repeated resharpening — HSS steel allows the cutting edge to be restored without loss of cutting properties

The Ø63 mm Morse taper drill is used in the production of drive, transmission, and hydraulic cylinder components. Holes for bearing bushings and valve seats require preliminary drilling with a twist drill before boring. H12 tolerance, Ø63.000–Ø63.300 mm.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø63 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket
✓ MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Mandatory pilot drilling

The Ø63 mm drill should not be used without a pilot hole. Drill a pilot hole using a Ø20–25 mm drill — this reduces axial force by 40–50% and eliminates engagement of the chisel edge responsible for vibration. At depths greater than 126 mm (2×D), use peck drilling with retraction every 30–40 mm and ample coolant (min. 8% emulsion, 8 l/min).

Material compatibility of the Ø63 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø63 mm drill bit

1) Drill a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole. 2) Check runout in the spindle (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Clamp the workpiece rigidly. 4) Use power feed — manual feed causes uneven pressure and resonance.

Yes — gray cast iron (GG20–GG30) and ductile cast iron (GGG40) are well suited to HSS drills. Short, brittle chips are easier to evacuate from the flutes than steel chips. Dry drilling with a compressed air blast is possible.

H12 tolerance as standard. Reaming or boring is required for H7 or tighter fits — a twist drill cannot achieve these tolerances without finishing.
