Ø40.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø40.5 mm twist drill is an industrial NWKc cutting tool designed for drilling large-diameter holes in structural and alloy steels. The MT4 Morse taper shank provides rigid, self-holding mounting in the spindle — without the risk of slipping at maximum cutting torque. The Ø40.5 Morse taper drill is suitable for pillar and box-column drilling machines used in industrial facilities.

Key benefits of the Ø40.5 mm metal drill bit

  • MT4 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 354 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 205 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 25 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT3 to MT5 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø40.5 mm Morse taper drill is used in facilities where large hole diameters are an everyday requirement — manufacturing frames, chassis, machine bodies, and housings. Holes meet H12 tolerance (Ø40.500–Ø40.750 mm); fits for pins require reaming to H7.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø40.5 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT4 → MT5 — for a spindle with an MT5 socket
✓ MT4 → MT3 — for a spindle with an MT3 socket
✓ MT4 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 121 mm (3ר40.5), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Material compatibility of the Ø40.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø40.5 mm drill bit

Depth greater than 3×D (121 mm): reduce feed by 30–50%, retract every 1×D, and use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Peck drilling prevents chips from jamming in the flutes.

1) Clean the taper and spindle socket. 2) Check runout (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Replace the drill if the taper is damaged or worn. 4) Do not stack reduction sleeves (e.g., MT4→MT3→MT5).

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.
