Ø14.4 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT2
Product description and key benefits
The Ø14.4 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT2 taper is standard equipment for pillar drilling machines in metalworking shops and toolrooms. The 14.4 mm diameter falls within the range where the MT2 taper provides an optimal ratio of contact area to operating load. The Ø14.4 Morse taper drill with type N flute geometry balances efficient chip evacuation with drill web rigidity.
Key benefits of the Ø14.4 mm metal drill bit
- MT2 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
- HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
- Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
- Compact 212 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
- Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 114 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 14 mm
- Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT1 to MT3 spindles using reduction sleeves
The Ø14.4 mm Morse taper drill is used in facilities where drilling holes is a daily operation — steel fabrication plants, machinery service shops, and toolrooms. Secure taper mounting allows hours of operation without checking the chuck. H12 hole tolerance, Ø14.400–Ø14.580 mm.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)
When drilling holes deeper than 43 mm (3ר14.4), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø14.4 mm drill bit
A pillar or box-column drilling machine with an MT2 spindle and a minimum power rating of 0.75–1.5 kW. Bench drilling machines with a drill chuck are not recommended — they cannot transmit the torque generated at a diameter of 14.4 mm.
It depends on the specific bolted joint. For metric coarse-thread bolts, the clearance hole diameter according to ISO 273 is 0.5–1 mm larger than the nominal thread diameter.
Use cooling with a 5–8% emulsion, do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters, and resharpen the tool before it becomes completely dull. Clean taper and spindle socket surfaces reduce runout — the main cause of accelerated wear.
