Ø49 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø49 mm metal drill bit with an MT4 Morse taper is a large-diameter tool whose mechanical loads require an MT4 taper with a diameter of 31.27 mm. At Ø49, torque in S355 steel is high enough to require a rigid machine base. The Ø49 Morse taper drill bit can operate at full speed only with abundant emulsion cooling and power spindle feed.

Key benefits of the Ø49 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT4 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø49 Morse taper drill is chosen for heavy-duty hole machining in machine building, ship repair yards, and valve and fitting factories. Typical applications: holes in end plates, bearing end shields, and drive components. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø49.000–Ø49.250 mm); tighter fits are achieved by boring.

Cooling for large diameters

At a diameter of 49 mm, the volume of chips generated per centimeter of depth is approximately 18.9 cm³. Use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Without pressurized cooling, limit the depth per pass to 73 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø49 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø49 mm drill bit

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.

When drilling S355 steel with a Ø49 mm drill, the torque is approximately 122 Nm. This requires a drilling machine with a minimum power rating of 2.9 kW and power spindle feed.

For a drilling machine with an MT5 spindle: MT4→MT5 sleeve. For a smaller MT3 spindle: MT4→MT3 sleeve (check that the operating load does not exceed the socket capacity). For removal: MT4 drill drift.
