Ø80 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT6

Product description and key benefits

The Ø80 mm metal drill bit is a specialist tool for machining very large-diameter holes on radial drilling machines and boring machines with an MT6 Morse taper spindle. At a diameter of 80 mm, axial force in structural steel exceeds 20 kN, and torque reaches 200 Nm — many times more than typical pillar drilling machines can handle. The Ø80 Morse taper drill bit is used exclusively for industrial machining: heavy machinery manufacturing, shipyards, and valve manufacturing plants.

Key benefits of the Ø80 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT6 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 270 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 260 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø80 Morse taper drill bit is reserved for the most demanding drilling operations — holes in thick castings, foundation plates with a thickness exceeding 100 mm, and mining machinery housings. Tolerance H12, Ø80.000–Ø80.300 mm; more precise holes require boring.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø80 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT6 → MT5 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT6 → MT4 — not recommended (socket significantly undersized for the load)
✓ MT6 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Machine tool requirements

The Ø80 mm drill bit requires a machine tool with a power rating of at least 7 kW, an MT6 Morse taper spindle, and power feed. Radial drilling machines require an arm length of at least 1200 mm. The workpiece must be rigidly clamped — cutting forces at this diameter can displace an inadequately secured plate.

Material compatibility of the Ø80 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø80 mm drill bit

At least two: 1) a Ø25–30 mm pilot hole, 2) the final Ø80 mm drill bit. For diameters above 90 mm, consider three stages: pilot Ø25 → intermediate Ø50 → final Ø80 mm.

Pressurized coolant is mandatory: emulsion concentration 8–10%, minimum flow rate 10 l/min. Lack of cooling leads to cutting-edge overheating, hardening of the cutting zone, and tool breakage.

Yes — an HSSE drill bit with the same dimensions (DIN 345) is a 1:1 replacement. The difference: HSSE with 5% cobalt better withstands the temperatures encountered during prolonged large-diameter drilling. When machining only carbon steels, the difference is small.
