Ø36.75 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø36.75 mm twist drill with an MT4 Morse taper is a standard solution for holes in the 32–50 mm diameter range. DIN 345 specifies an MT4 taper for this range, providing a compromise between shank dimensions and operating load. The Ø36.75 Morse taper drill allows drilling into solid material without prior pilot drilling at diameters up to approximately 40 mm.

Key benefits of the Ø36.75 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT4 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 195 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 180 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø36.75 Morse taper drill is chosen for heavy-duty hole machining in machine building, ship repair yards, and valve and fitting factories. Typical applications: holes in end plates, bearing end shields, and drive components. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø36.750–Ø37.000 mm); tighter fits are achieved by boring.

Cooling for large diameters

At a diameter of 36.75 mm, the volume of chips generated per centimeter of depth is approximately 10.6 cm³. Use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Without pressurized cooling, limit the depth per pass to 55 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø36.75 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø36.75 mm drill bit

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.

When drilling S355 steel with a Ø36.75 mm drill, the torque is approximately 91 Nm. This requires a drilling machine with a minimum power rating of 2.2 kW and power spindle feed.

For a drilling machine with an MT5 spindle: MT4→MT5 sleeve. For a smaller MT3 spindle: MT4→MT3 sleeve (check that the operating load does not exceed the socket capacity). For removal: MT4 drill drift.
