Ø26 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø26 mm HSS twist drill with an MT3 taper provides stable drilling of large-diameter holes in steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm². The MT3 Morse taper mounts directly in the spindle without intermediate clamping components, eliminating sources of radial runout. The Ø26 Morse taper drill can be used in setups with MT3→MT4 and MT3→MT5 reduction sleeves.

Key benefits of the Ø26 mm metal drill bit

  • MT3 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 286 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 165 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 20 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT2 to MT4 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø26 mm Morse taper drill bit is used to manufacture infrastructure components — columns, supports, brackets, and load-bearing frames. In steel construction, hole diameters of 23–31 mm correspond to M22–M30 bolts. An H12 tolerance of Ø26.000–Ø26.210 mm is sufficient for through holes.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø26 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT3 → MT4 — for a spindle with an MT4 socket
✓ MT3 → MT5 — for a spindle with an MT5 socket
✓ MT3 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Machine tool requirements

The Ø26 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø26 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø26 mm drill bit

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.
