Ø42.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø42.5 mm metal drill bit with an MT4 Morse taper is a large-diameter tool whose mechanical loads require an MT4 taper with a diameter of 31.27 mm. At Ø42.5, torque in S355 steel is high enough to require a rigid machine base. The Ø42.5 Morse taper drill bit can operate at full speed only with abundant emulsion cooling and power spindle feed.

Key benefits of the Ø42.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT4 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 205 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 195 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø42.5 Morse taper drill is designed for drilling holes in machine housings, frames, and foundation plates. At MT4 diameters, the tool requires a machine with power feed — manual drilling will not provide uniform pressure. Holes within tolerance class H12, Ø42.500–Ø42.750 mm; tighter fits are achieved by boring.

Minimum machine tool power

The Ø42.5 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 2.2 kW of power and power spindle feed. Stability is difficult to maintain with manual feed — uneven pressure leads to vibration and accelerated cutting edge wear. A box-column or radial drilling machine is recommended.

Material compatibility of the Ø42.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø42.5 mm drill bit

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.

When drilling S355 steel with a Ø42.5 mm drill, the torque is approximately 106 Nm. This requires a drilling machine with a minimum power rating of 2.5 kW and power spindle feed.

For a drilling machine with an MT5 spindle: MT4→MT5 sleeve. For a smaller MT3 spindle: MT4→MT3 sleeve (check that the operating load does not exceed the socket capacity). For removal: MT4 drill drift.
