And here we can distinguish two groups of tools, dividing by the working part, into thread turning knives for threads with an interchangeable insert and thread turning knives with a solder insert or HSS part. Folding thread turning k nives have an interchangeable forked, 3-blade insert, usually in the shape of a triangle. There are knives for internal , external threads and for right or left-hand threads. Like any tool and turning knives have unified designations so that its dimensional characteristics can be identified unambiguously. The first letter in the naming of the knives indicates the type of attachment of the insert to the threads, but this is most often a Torx screw, the next letter indicates whether there is an internal I (internal) or external E (external) knife, the 3rd letter specifies the direction of the knife whether it is right R (right hand) or left L (left hand). The 3rd letter is followed by the size of the cross-section of the shank and the next by the size of the fork insert to be mounted.

An example of a right hand external thread turning knife is PER 25x25 16, it means that it has a 25 by 25 mm shank for a cutting insert with a side size of 16 mm, for example 16 ER AG60 BMA. Another thread knives we have to choose from are lathe knives with a brazed insert. They are very common in use because they are cheap and for small batch production quite sufficient. They also allow turning with machines that have relatively low rigidity, making thread turning on a conventional lathe very easy. They are also available in versions for external and internal threads, as well as right- and left-hand knives, but in this case it is very rare to find left-hand knives. These knives come in different grades depending on their application. Knives with a brazed plate for threads for steel have the designation P and the color blue, knives for stainless steel the designation M and the color yellow, for cast iron K and the color red. The knives have a brazed insert with a 60-degree willow angle, which allows them to turn metric and American unified threads.
