Ø7.15 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø7.15 mm twist drill with an MT1 Morse taper is an alternative to straight-shank drills wherever a drill chuck does not provide sufficient clamping rigidity. Direct mounting in the spindle of a pillar drilling machine eliminates the intermediate link — the chuck — which can become a source of runout and slippage during intensive use. The Ø7.15 Morse taper drill is particularly suitable for metalworking shops and toolrooms, where hole position accuracy matters when fitting pins and bushings.
Key benefits of the Ø7.15 mm metal drill bit
- Self-holding Morse taper — MT1 transmits torque without slippage — essential for prolonged batch drilling
- HSS steel with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — the cutting edge retains its sharpness throughout the tool's service interval between sharpenings
- Flute length 69 mm — the maximum drilling depth allows typical shop sections and sheet metal to be machined in a single pass
- 118° point angle — self-centering in soft steels — eliminates the need for spot drilling on flat surfaces
- Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size in batch and single-part production
- Cutting edge reconditioning — repeated resharpening extends tool life — at l2 = 69 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 8 mm
The Ø7.15 mm Morse taper drill is selected for repair and assembly work on pillar drilling machines. The tool allows fast drilling of through and blind holes in steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm². H12 tolerance at Ø7.150–Ø7.300 mm provides dimensional accuracy sufficient for most bolted connections.

Drilling blind holes
When drilling blind holes with the Ø7.15 mm drill, allow for the drill point cone — the usable depth is approximately 2 mm less than the set depth. For holes deeper than 21 mm (3×D), retract the drill every 10 mm to clear chips from the flutes.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø7.15 mm drill bit
The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 69 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 67 mm.
In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
