Ø31.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø31.25 mm metal drill bit with an MT3 taper shank to DIN 345 is a tool used under heavy-duty machining conditions on box-column and radial drill presses. Type N flute geometry balances chip evacuation and drill core rigidity. The Ø31.25 Morse taper drill bit is selected by machine builders, repair facilities, and steel fabrication plants.

Key benefits of the Ø31.25 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT3 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 180 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 165 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø31.25 Morse taper drill is used to machine holes for flanged and pinned connections in heavy machinery components. At diameters in the MT3 range, the hole size is large enough to require power spindle feed. H12 tolerance, Ø31.250–Ø31.500 mm; fitted holes are achieved by reaming or boring.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 93 mm (3ר31.25), use peck drilling with retraction every 1×D. Use ample emulsion coolant at a minimum concentration of 6–8%. Reduce the feed by 30–50%.

Material compatibility of the Ø31.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø31.25 mm drill bit

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.
