Ø24.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø24.25 mm twist drill with an MT3 taper becomes the only practical choice for stationary drilling machines in the 23–31 mm diameter range. A drill chuck cannot transmit the torque in this diameter range — the risk of slippage and reduced hole quality is too high. The design of the Ø24.25 Morse taper drill with an MT3 taper eliminates these problems.

Key benefits of the Ø24.25 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT3 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø24.25 Morse taper drill is used in machinery manufacturing and repair plants for holes in structural components with more demanding dimensional requirements. Typical applications: holes for M22–M30 bolts, seats for bushings and pins. H12 tolerance (Ø24.250–Ø24.460 mm); H7 requires reaming.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 24.25 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 48 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø24.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø24.25 mm drill bit

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.
