Ø52.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5

Product description and key benefits

The Ø52.5 mm HSS twist drill with an MT5 Morse taper is designed for use on machine tools with a rigid construction and sufficient drive power. At diameters above 50 mm, the chisel edge generates a significant portion of the axial force — pilot holes reduce this effect and improve tool guidance stability. The Ø52.5 Morse taper drill is used in machinery plants, shipyards, and valve and fitting factories.

Key benefits of the Ø52.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT5 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 225 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 210 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø52.5 mm Morse taper drill is used in the production of drive, transmission, and hydraulic cylinder components. Holes for bearing bushings and valve seats require preliminary drilling with a twist drill before boring. H12 tolerance, Ø52.500–Ø52.800 mm.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø52.5 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket
✓ MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Vibration at large diameters

At a diameter of 52.5 mm, the risk of vibration is increased — the long chisel edge generates an asymmetrical load. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates chisel edge engagement. Additionally: check spindle runout (max. 0.03 mm) and secure the workpiece with rigid fixtures.

Material compatibility of the Ø52.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø52.5 mm drill bit

At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 131 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.

Yes — it is required. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates cutting by the chisel edge, which at a diameter of 52.5 mm generates 60–70% of the total axial force and severe vibration.

1) Drill a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole. 2) Check runout in the spindle (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Clamp the workpiece rigidly. 4) Use power feed — manual feed causes uneven pressure and resonance.
