Ø4.1 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

Choosing a Ø4.1 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper instead of a straight-shank equivalent is justified wherever the drilling machine has a tapered spindle. Seating the tool directly in the spindle simplifies the process — eliminating the chuck reduces setup operations and the risk of runout. The Ø4.1 Morse taper drill conforming to DIN 345 fits any MT1 spindle, regardless of the machine tool manufacturer.

Key benefits of the Ø4.1 mm metal drill bit

  • Self-holding Morse taper — MT1 transmits torque without slippage — essential for prolonged batch drilling
  • HSS steel with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — the cutting edge retains its sharpness throughout the tool's service interval between sharpenings
  • Flute length 43 mm — the maximum drilling depth allows typical shop sections and sheet metal to be machined in a single pass
  • 118° point angle — self-centering in soft steels — eliminates the need for spot drilling on flat surfaces
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size in batch and single-part production
  • Cutting edge reconditioning — repeated resharpening extends tool life — at l2 = 43 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 5 mm

The Ø4.1 Morse taper drill bit is most often selected for mounting holes in hollow sections, thick plates, and machine components. In toolrooms, it is used to prepare preliminary holes before reaming to a dowel pin fit. Holes are produced to tolerance class H12 (Ø4.100–Ø4.220 mm); if class H7 is required, additional reaming is necessary.

Coolant for drilling steel

The Ø4.1 mm HSS drill requires cooling with a 5–8% emulsion when drilling structural steels. Dry drilling reduces cutting edge life by 50–70% and reduces hole surface quality. Minimum coolant flow: 2 l/min.

Material compatibility of the Ø4.1 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø4.1 mm drill bit

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.

The Ø4.1 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.
