Ø32.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø32.5 mm twist drill with an MT4 Morse taper is a standard solution for holes in the 32–50 mm diameter range. DIN 345 specifies an MT4 taper for this range, providing a compromise between shank dimensions and operating load. The Ø32.5 Morse taper drill allows drilling into solid material without prior pilot drilling at diameters up to approximately 40 mm.

Key benefits of the Ø32.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT4 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø32.5 mm Morse taper drill is used in facilities where large hole diameters are an everyday requirement — manufacturing frames, chassis, machine bodies, and housings. Holes meet H12 tolerance (Ø32.500–Ø32.750 mm); fits for pins require reaming to H7.

Cooling for large diameters

At a diameter of 32.5 mm, the volume of chips generated per centimeter of depth is approximately 8.3 cm³. Use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Without pressurized cooling, limit the depth per pass to 48 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø32.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø32.5 mm drill bit

Depth greater than 3×D (97 mm): reduce feed by 30–50%, retract every 1×D, and use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Peck drilling prevents chips from jamming in the flutes.

1) Clean the taper and spindle socket. 2) Check runout (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Replace the drill if the taper is damaged or worn. 4) Do not stack reduction sleeves (e.g., MT4→MT3→MT5).

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.
