Ø4.4 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø4.4 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper shank conforming to DIN 345 is a basic tool for any pillar drilling machine. Its cutting geometry with a 118° point angle provides self-centering in soft and medium-hard steels without spot drilling. The Ø4.4 Morse taper drill is used to produce mounting holes, through holes, and holes for tapping in metalworking shops and maintenance departments.

Key benefits of the Ø4.4 mm metal drill bit

  • Self-holding Morse taper — MT1 transmits torque without slippage — essential for prolonged batch drilling
  • HSS steel with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — the cutting edge retains its sharpness throughout the tool's service interval between sharpenings
  • Flute length 43 mm — the maximum drilling depth allows typical shop sections and sheet metal to be machined in a single pass
  • 118° point angle — self-centering in soft steels — eliminates the need for spot drilling on flat surfaces
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size in batch and single-part production
  • Cutting edge reconditioning — repeated resharpening extends tool life — at l2 = 43 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 5 mm

The Ø4.4 mm Morse taper drill is used in metalworking shops for bolt and dowel holes in steel components. In batch production, it provides repeatable dimensional accuracy within tolerance class H12 (Ø4.400–Ø4.520 mm). H7 fits require finish reaming.

Checking radial runout

Before drilling with the Ø4.4 mm drill, check radial runout in the spindle — the maximum permissible value is 0.02 mm. Excessive runout reduces hole quality and accelerates cutting edge wear. The taper and spindle socket must be clean and dry.

Material compatibility of the Ø4.4 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø4.4 mm drill bit

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.

The Ø4.4 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
