Ø3.6 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

Choosing a Ø3.6 mm twist drill with an MT1 taper instead of a straight-shank equivalent is justified wherever the drilling machine has a tapered spindle. Seating the tool directly in the spindle simplifies the process — eliminating the chuck reduces setup operations and the risk of runout. The Ø3.6 Morse taper drill conforming to DIN 345 fits any MT1 spindle, regardless of the machine tool manufacturer.

Key benefits of the Ø3.6 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
  • DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
  • Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
  • Overall length of 120 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
  • Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks

The Ø3.6 Morse taper drill is used in maintenance departments for repairing and reconditioning machine components. Standard H12 hole tolerance (Ø3.600–Ø3.720 mm) is sufficient for most through holes; close fits are achieved by reaming.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø3.6 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT1 → MT2 — for a spindle with an MT2 socket
✓ MT1 → MT3 — for a spindle with an MT3 socket
✓ MT1 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Drilling blind holes

When drilling blind holes with the Ø3.6 mm drill, allow for the drill point cone — the usable depth is approximately 1 mm less than the set depth. For holes deeper than 10 mm (3×D), retract the drill every 5 mm to clear chips from the flutes.

Material compatibility of the Ø3.6 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø3.6 mm drill bit

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.

The Ø3.6 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
