Ø9.7 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø9.7 mm twist drill with an MT1 Morse taper is an alternative to straight-shank drills wherever a drill chuck does not provide sufficient clamping rigidity. Direct mounting in the spindle of a pillar drilling machine eliminates the intermediate link — the chuck — which can become a source of runout and slippage during intensive use. The Ø9.7 Morse taper drill is particularly suitable for metalworking shops and toolrooms, where hole position accuracy matters when fitting pins and bushings.

Key benefits of the Ø9.7 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
  • DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
  • Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
  • Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
  • Overall length of 168 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
  • Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks

The Ø9.7 mm Morse taper drill is selected for repair and assembly work on pillar drilling machines. The tool allows fast drilling of through and blind holes in steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm². H12 tolerance at Ø9.700–Ø9.850 mm provides dimensional accuracy sufficient for most bolted connections.

Checking radial runout

Before drilling with the Ø9.7 mm drill, check radial runout in the spindle — the maximum permissible value is 0.02 mm. Excessive runout reduces hole quality and accelerates cutting edge wear. The taper and spindle socket must be clean and dry.

Material compatibility of the Ø9.7 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø9.7 mm drill bit

A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.

The Ø9.7 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
