Ø34.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4

Product description and key benefits

The Ø34.25 mm NWKc metal drill bit is an industrial-grade tool — both in terms of cutting-edge material (HSS) and mounting method (MT4 Morse taper to DIN 345). At this diameter, every millimeter of drilling depth generates a substantial volume of chips that must be efficiently evacuated through the helical flutes. The Ø34.25 Morse taper drill bit requires emulsion cooling — dry drilling reduces cutting-edge life by as much as 70%.

Key benefits of the Ø34.25 mm metal drill bit

  • MT4 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 339 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 190 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 23 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT3 to MT5 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø34.25 mm Morse taper drill bit is used for heavy-duty machining — manufacturing machine frames, special-purpose vehicle chassis, and components of metallurgical equipment. The tool operates under conditions where hole quality depends on clamping rigidity and stable cutting parameters. Tolerance grade H12, Ø34.250–Ø34.500 mm.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø34.25 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT4 → MT5 — for a spindle with an MT5 socket
✓ MT4 → MT3 — for a spindle with an MT3 socket
✓ MT4 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Minimum machine tool power

The Ø34.25 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 2.2 kW of power and power spindle feed. Stability is difficult to maintain with manual feed — uneven pressure leads to vibration and accelerated cutting edge wear. A box-column or radial drilling machine is recommended.

Material compatibility of the Ø34.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø34.25 mm drill bit

1) Clean the taper and spindle socket. 2) Check runout (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Replace the drill if the taper is damaged or worn. 4) Do not stack reduction sleeves (e.g., MT4→MT3→MT5).

For diameters up to approximately 40 mm, drilling into solid material is possible after spot drilling with an NC 90° drill. Above 40 mm, a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole is recommended to reduce axial force by 40–50% and eliminate vibration from the chisel edge.

When drilling S355 steel with a Ø34.25 mm drill, the torque is approximately 85 Nm. This requires a drilling machine with a minimum power rating of 2.1 kW and power spindle feed.
