Ø61 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5
Product description and key benefits
The Ø61 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT5 taper falls within a range where every drilling operation requires careful planning — from pilot hole selection and cutting parameters to the cooling system. The MT5 taper is the largest taper used in standard shop drilling machines. With a flute length of 240 mm, the Ø61 Morse taper drill allows drilling in thick plates with a single tool.
Key benefits of the Ø61 mm metal drill bit
- Self-holding taper shank — MT5 transmits full torque to the cutting edges without intermediate components
- HSS with a hardness of 63–65 HRC — stable cutting of materials with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² without loss of sharpness
- Overall length of 427 mm — proportional to the drilling diameter — provides a balance between reach and rigidity
- General-purpose 118° geometry — suitable for most materials encountered in shop machining
- Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT4 to MT6 spindles using reduction sleeves
- Repeated resharpening — HSS steel allows the cutting edge to be restored without loss of cutting properties
The Ø61 Morse taper drill is used in heavy machinery manufacturing plants, ship repair yards, and industrial valve and fitting factories. Typical applications include holes for mechanical anchors in foundation plates, holes in gearbox bearing end shields, and bores for guide bushings. Hole tolerance class H12 (Ø61.000–Ø61.300 mm); H7 and tighter fits are achieved by boring.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø61 MM DRILL BIT:
| ✓ | MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket |
| ✓ | MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load) |
| ✓ | MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle |

Vibration at large diameters
At a diameter of 61 mm, the risk of vibration is increased — the long chisel edge generates an asymmetrical load. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates chisel edge engagement. Additionally: check spindle runout (max. 0.03 mm) and secure the workpiece with rigid fixtures.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø61 mm drill bit
H12 tolerance as standard. Reaming or boring is required for H7 or tighter fits — a twist drill cannot achieve these tolerances without finishing.
At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 152 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.
Yes — it is required. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates cutting by the chisel edge, which at a diameter of 61 mm generates 60–70% of the total axial force and severe vibration.
