Ø7.8 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1

Product description and key benefits

The Ø7.8 mm twist drill with an MT1 Morse taper achieves higher hole accuracy than comparable straight-shank drills — direct mounting in the spindle shortens the torque transmission path and reduces radial runout. The tool is designed for stationary drilling machines: pillar machines, bench machines with an MT1 spindle, and box-column machines. The Ø7.8 Morse taper drill with a flute length of 75 mm is sufficient for holes in sheet metal and sections of typical shop thicknesses.

Key benefits of the Ø7.8 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 75 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 65 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø7.8 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø7.800–Ø7.950 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Spot drilling

When drilling on uneven surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or inclined planes, spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended before using the Ø7.8 mm drill. The spot-drilled hole stabilizes the point position and prevents the cutting edge from slipping away from the marked location.

Material compatibility of the Ø7.8 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø7.8 mm drill bit

Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.

The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 75 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 73 mm.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
