Ø28.75 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø28.75 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT3 taper operates in a diameter range where adequate rigidity of the spindle–tool system is required. At a diameter of 28.75 mm, the torque generated when cutting structural steel exceeds the capacity of a typical drill chuck — the Morse taper transmits it directly to the spindle. With a flute length of 175 mm, the Ø28.75 Morse taper drill allows drilling in plates and sections up to 160 mm thick.

Key benefits of the Ø28.75 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT3 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø28.75 Morse taper drill is used in machinery manufacturing and repair plants for holes in structural components with more demanding dimensional requirements. Typical applications: holes for M22–M30 bolts, seats for bushings and pins. H12 tolerance (Ø28.750–Ø28.960 mm); H7 requires reaming.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 28.75 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 57 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø28.75 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø28.75 mm drill bit

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.
