Ø23.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø23.25 mm twist drill with an MT3 Morse taper is designed for drilling holes for bolted connections in steel structures — pipeline flanges, truss joints, and beam end plates. The MT3 taper with a diameter of 23.825 mm provides sufficient contact area to transmit the torque generated when drilling holes larger than 23 mm. The Ø23.25 Morse taper drill seats in the spindles of shop-grade pillar and box-column drilling machines rated at 1.5 kW or more.

Key benefits of the Ø23.25 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT3 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø23.25 mm Morse taper drill is selected for holes for pins, bearing bushings, and flanged connections in machinery manufacturing. It is suitable for machining foundation plates and bearing end shields. H12 tolerance holes (Ø23.250–Ø23.460 mm); tighter fits are achieved by reaming or boring.

Machine tool requirements

The Ø23.25 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø23.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø23.25 mm drill bit

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.
