Their construction consists of a cylindrical-shaped shank, which can sometimes have a Weldon flattening. The Weldon flattening is used for larger diameter cutters, roughly of fi 12 mm and above. This fixture is used to eliminate the possibility of rotational movement in the toolholder by the cutter during heavy machining. Thanks to this flattening, we can grip the cutter not only its diameter, but also press the screw against the holder. The price of metal milling cut ters depends mainly on the material of manufacture whether it is HSS or HSSE and the diameter of the burr.

Machining steel with NFPa metal shank cutters

The metal milling cutters themselves also come in different versions when it comes to the number of blades or otherwise teeth. And here, too, the number of blades goes proportionally with the diameter, starting with Z-4 ( four teeth ) and ending with Z-8 ( eight teeth ). NFPa metal shank milling cutters come in standard sizes from Fi 1 mm to Fi 40 mm. At diameters above 40 mm, the production cost of such a milling cutter rises sharply, out of proportion to the benefits that can be derived from its work. That's why above this diameter, push-on cutters are produced, which require a shank for their work. Finger metal milling cut ters can also have different blades: center blades and a cap blade.

Center blades allow for face-down vertical plunge milling, which is useful, for example, if you have a channel or bean to mill. There are also blades with a nut, the cutter blades then do not reach the center of the cutter axis and face milling - vertical down is not possible.
