Ø25.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø25.5 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT3 taper operates in a diameter range where adequate rigidity of the spindle–tool system is required. At a diameter of 25.5 mm, the torque generated when cutting structural steel exceeds the capacity of a typical drill chuck — the Morse taper transmits it directly to the spindle. With a flute length of 165 mm, the Ø25.5 Morse taper drill allows drilling in plates and sections up to 150 mm thick.

Key benefits of the Ø25.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT3 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 165 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 150 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø25.5 Morse taper drill is used mainly in steel construction — industrial buildings, bridges, and viaducts — where holes with diameters of 23–31 mm are standard for assembly connections. In repair shops, it is used to restore holes in machinery. H12 tolerance (Ø25.500–Ø25.710 mm); H7 fits are achieved with a reamer.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø25.5 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT3 → MT4 — for a spindle with an MT4 socket
✓ MT3 → MT5 — for a spindle with an MT5 socket
✓ MT3 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 76 mm (3ר25.5), use peck drilling with retraction every 1×D. Use ample emulsion coolant at a minimum concentration of 6–8%. Reduce the feed by 30–50%.

Material compatibility of the Ø25.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø25.5 mm drill bit

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.
