Ø10.1 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø10.1 mm NWKc twist drill is distinguished by its mounting method — the MT1 Morse taper eliminates the intermediate component between the tool and the spindle. This results in lower radial runout and improved repeatability of hole dimensions. The Ø10.1 Morse taper drill with a high-speed steel (HSS) cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C, allowing drilling without the risk of tempering the cutting edge.
Key benefits of the Ø10.1 mm metal drill bit
- MT1 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
- HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
- Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
- Compact 168 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
- Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 87 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 10 mm
- Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT1 to MT2 spindles using reduction sleeves
The Ø10.1 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø10.100–Ø10.280 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Checking radial runout
Before drilling with the Ø10.1 mm drill, check radial runout in the spindle — the maximum permissible value is 0.02 mm. Excessive runout reduces hole quality and accelerates cutting edge wear. The taper and spindle socket must be clean and dry.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø10.1 mm drill bit
A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
The Ø10.1 mm NWKc drill bit with an MT1 taper mounts directly in the drill press spindle — the self-holding taper eliminates slipping under high cutting torque. A straight shank drill bit requires a drill chuck, which may not transmit the full torque during heavy use.
Yes — using an MT1→MT2 reduction sleeve. The sleeve ensures proper seating of the taper in the larger spindle socket. Use a correctly sized drill drift for removal.
