Ø85 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT6

Product description and key benefits

The Ø85 mm metal drill bit with an MT6 Morse taper requires experience in selecting cutting parameters and drilling sequences — the 77–100 mm diameter range is the domain of specialists. The operator must provide: a Ø25–30 mm pilot hole, power feed, pressurized coolant, and rigid workpiece clamping. Failure to meet any of these conditions when using the Ø85 Morse taper drill bit risks tool breakage or spindle damage.

Key benefits of the Ø85 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT6 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 280 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 270 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø85 mm Morse taper drill bit is a tool for plants equipped with heavy machine tools — radial drilling machines, boring machines, and machining centers. Typical applications: holes for bearing bushings, valve seats, and process holes in castings. Tolerance H12 (Ø85.000–Ø85.350 mm).

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø85 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT6 → MT5 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT6 → MT4 — not recommended (socket significantly undersized for the load)
✓ MT6 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Staged drilling — mandatory

The Ø85 mm drill bit requires two- or three-stage drilling: 1) NC spot drilling at 90°, 2) a Ø25–30 mm pilot hole, 3) the final Ø85 mm drill bit. Drilling without a pilot hole generates an axial force above 25 kN and torque exceeding 200 Nm — risk of spindle damage.

Material compatibility of the Ø85 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø85 mm drill bit

Yes — an HSSE drill bit with the same dimensions (DIN 345) is a 1:1 replacement. The difference: HSSE with 5% cobalt better withstands the temperatures encountered during prolonged large-diameter drilling. When machining only carbon steels, the difference is small.

Maximum runout of 0.03 mm measured at the drill tip. Clean the taper and socket before each installation. Do not nest reduction sleeves. Replace the drill bit if the taper shows signs of wear or indentation.

At least 7 kW with an MT6 Morse taper spindle and power feed. Radial drilling machines with an arm length of at least 1200 mm. Torque at a diameter of 85 mm in steel exceeds 200 Nm.
