Ø31 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø31 mm metal drill bit with an MT3 taper shank to DIN 345 is a tool used under heavy-duty machining conditions on box-column and radial drill presses. Type N flute geometry balances chip evacuation and drill core rigidity. The Ø31 Morse taper drill bit is selected by machine builders, repair facilities, and steel fabrication plants.

Key benefits of the Ø31 mm metal drill bit

  • MT3 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 301 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 180 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 22 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT2 to MT4 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø31 Morse taper drill is used mainly in steel construction — industrial buildings, bridges, and viaducts — where holes with diameters of 23–31 mm are standard for assembly connections. In repair shops, it is used to restore holes in machinery. H12 tolerance (Ø31.000–Ø31.250 mm); H7 fits are achieved with a reamer.

Machine tool requirements

The Ø31 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø31 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø31 mm drill bit

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.
