Ø74 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT5

Product description and key benefits

The Ø74 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT5 taper falls within a range where every drilling operation requires careful planning — from pilot hole selection and cutting parameters to the cooling system. The MT5 taper is the largest taper used in standard shop drilling machines. With a flute length of 260 mm, the Ø74 Morse taper drill allows drilling in thick plates with a single tool.

Key benefits of the Ø74 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT5 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 260 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 250 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø74 Morse taper drill bit is designed for industrial use — drilling holes in foundation plates, gearbox housings, and welded structural components. Standard hole tolerance grade H12 (Ø74.000–Ø74.300 mm); tight fits require boring or reaming.

REDUCTION SLEEVES COMPATIBLE WITH THE Ø74 MM DRILL BIT:

✓ MT5 → MT6 — for a spindle with an MT6 socket
✓ MT5 → MT4 — not recommended (socket capacity below the operating load)
✓ MT5 drill drift — for removing the drill bit from the spindle

Mandatory pilot drilling

The Ø74 mm drill should not be used without a pilot hole. Drill a pilot hole using a Ø20–25 mm drill — this reduces axial force by 40–50% and eliminates engagement of the chisel edge responsible for vibration. At depths greater than 148 mm (2×D), use peck drilling with retraction every 30–40 mm and ample coolant (min. 8% emulsion, 8 l/min).

Material compatibility of the Ø74 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 50%, pilot drilling required)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (increased Vc, emulsion cooling)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø74 mm drill bit

At least 4 kW of motor power and an MT5 or larger spindle. When drilling S355 steel, torque at the drill reaches 185 Nm — bench and magnetic drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity. The optimal machine is a box-column or radial drilling machine with power feed.

Yes — it is required. A Ø20–25 mm pilot hole eliminates cutting by the chisel edge, which at a diameter of 74 mm generates 60–70% of the total axial force and severe vibration.

1) Drill a Ø20–25 mm pilot hole. 2) Check runout in the spindle (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Clamp the workpiece rigidly. 4) Use power feed — manual feed causes uneven pressure and resonance.
