Ø17.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT2

Product description and key benefits

The Ø17.25 mm twist drill with an MT2 taper shank conforming to DIN 345 is used on pillar and box-column drilling machines in metalworking shops, toolrooms, and maintenance departments. The 17.25 mm diameter falls within the MT2 taper range, the most common size in shop drilling machines rated at 0.75–1.5 kW. The Ø17.25 Morse taper drill with right-hand helical flute geometry evacuates chips from the cutting zone even when drilling deep holes.

Key benefits of the Ø17.25 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT2 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 130 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 115 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø17.25 mm Morse taper drill is chosen for holes for bolted joints in machine components and steel structures. Maintenance departments use it to restore worn holes and drill new ones during assembly. Holes within tolerance class H12 (Ø17.250–Ø17.430 mm); tighter fits are achieved with a reamer.

Mounting the drill in the spindle

Before mounting the Ø17.25 mm drill, remove chips, oil, and contaminants from the taper and spindle socket. Residue between the contact surfaces causes radial runout and can damage the spindle socket.

Material compatibility of the Ø17.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø17.25 mm drill bit

It depends on the specific bolted joint. For metric coarse-thread bolts, the clearance hole diameter according to ISO 273 is 0.5–1 mm larger than the nominal thread diameter.

Use cooling with a 5–8% emulsion, do not exceed the recommended cutting parameters, and resharpen the tool before it becomes completely dull. Clean taper and spindle socket surfaces reduce runout — the main cause of accelerated wear.

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on uneven or inclined surfaces, where the drill may slip away from the marked point.
