Ø35.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT4
Product description and key benefits
The Ø35.5 mm HSS metal drill bit with an MT4 Morse taper shank is designed for heavy-duty hole machining in structural and alloy steels. DIN 345 specifies an MT4 taper for diameters of 32–50 mm, providing a compromise between shank size and load capacity. The Ø35.5 Morse taper drill bit requires a machine tool with a power rating of at least 2.2 kW and a Morse taper spindle.
Key benefits of the Ø35.5 mm metal drill bit
- MT4 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
- HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
- Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
- Compact 339 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
- Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 190 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 23 mm
- Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT3 to MT5 spindles using reduction sleeves
The Ø35.5 Morse taper drill is designed for drilling holes in machine housings, frames, and foundation plates. At MT4 diameters, the tool requires a machine with power feed — manual drilling will not provide uniform pressure. Holes within tolerance class H12, Ø35.500–Ø35.750 mm; tighter fits are achieved by boring.

Minimum machine tool power
The Ø35.5 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 2.2 kW of power and power spindle feed. Stability is difficult to maintain with manual feed — uneven pressure leads to vibration and accelerated cutting edge wear. A box-column or radial drilling machine is recommended.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø35.5 mm drill bit
For a drilling machine with an MT5 spindle: MT4→MT5 sleeve. For a smaller MT3 spindle: MT4→MT3 sleeve (check that the operating load does not exceed the socket capacity). For removal: MT4 drill drift.
Depth greater than 3×D (106 mm): reduce feed by 30–50%, retract every 1×D, and use a 6–8% emulsion at a minimum flow rate of 6 l/min. Peck drilling prevents chips from jamming in the flutes.
1) Clean the taper and spindle socket. 2) Check runout (maximum 0.03 mm). 3) Replace the drill if the taper is damaged or worn. 4) Do not stack reduction sleeves (e.g., MT4→MT3→MT5).
