Ø5.1 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø5.1 mm twist drill with an MT1 Morse taper is an alternative to straight-shank drills wherever a drill chuck does not provide sufficient clamping rigidity. Direct mounting in the spindle of a pillar drilling machine eliminates the intermediate link — the chuck — which can become a source of runout and slippage during intensive use. The Ø5.1 Morse taper drill is particularly suitable for metalworking shops and toolrooms, where hole position accuracy matters when fitting pins and bushings.
Key benefits of the Ø5.1 mm metal drill bit
- Direct mounting in an MT1 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck and its associated radial runout
- DIN 345 — ensures full interchangeability with drills from other manufacturers and compatibility with reduction sleeves
- Right-hand helical flutes — efficient chip evacuation from the cutting zone even when drilling holes deeper than 3×D
- Abrasion resistance — high-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge durability when machining structural steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm²
- Overall length of 133 mm — compact construction increases system rigidity and reduces vibration during drilling
- Material versatility — drilling steel, cast iron, and aluminum — one tool for most shop tasks
The Ø5.1 Morse taper drill bit is most often selected for mounting holes in hollow sections, thick plates, and machine components. In toolrooms, it is used to prepare preliminary holes before reaming to a dowel pin fit. Holes are produced to tolerance class H12 (Ø5.100–Ø5.220 mm); if class H7 is required, additional reaming is necessary.

Drilling blind holes
When drilling blind holes with the Ø5.1 mm drill, allow for the drill point cone — the usable depth is approximately 2 mm less than the set depth. For holes deeper than 15 mm (3×D), retract the drill every 7 mm to clear chips from the flutes.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø5.1 mm drill bit
The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 52 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 50 mm.
In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
