Milling heads are cutting tools designed for machining. They are mainly designed for planning but also for machining the lateral surfaces of workpieces. Like blades, they have milling cutting inserts, which are fixed in specially made slots for this purpose.

What are milling heads designed for?

Folding millingheads, or in other words for indexable cutting inserts, are intended primarily for roughing and medium-precision machining, but with the use of appropriate milling inserts they can also be used for surface finishing.

These tools are available in larger diameter versions, starting from fi 40 mm, fi 50 mm , fi 63 mm, fi 80 mm, fi 100 mm, fi 125 mm, fi 160 mm and fi 200 mm up to fi 400 mm. In terms of design, there are milling heads with different clearance angles, where the most popular is of course 90 degrees, but clearance angles such as 75 degrees, 43, 45, 67, 88 degrees are also available.

The most popular model for interchangeable cutting inserts are planning milling heads ( angle milling heads are also available ) model according to Dolfamex with designation 220.17 for smooth triangular milling inserts ( without chip breaker ) with 3 cutting edges. They come in two size versions: TPKN 2204 PPR and the smaller TPKN 1603 PPR, the PPR designation stands for the right-cutting question, it has special chamfers on its corner. Thanks to this chamfering, the machined surface has less roughness, but also gains a better aesthetic appearance ( which is already increasingly required by tool shop customers ).

More and more milling heads are now available for metal, steel, stainless steel, cast iron as well as hardened and heat-resistant materials. Its application mainly depends on the use of indexable inserts, it is the cutting inserts that decide what material we can work in.

Cutting inserts are made in different grades depending on their purpose and each grade is described differently by the manufacturer. For standardization, ISO designations are adopted according to application. For milling inserts the following designations are adopted:

P - blue-colored steel
M - yellow-colored stainless steel
K - cast iron with red color
N - non-ferrous materials with green color
H - hardened materials with gray color
S - heat-resistant materials with a copper color.

How the milling heads are fixed for planning

For their use, however, they require a special milling arbor that mediates between the machine spindle and the milling head. Usually, however, the milling head with the arbor does not come in a set and they are separate tools. For each head, we need to select a milling arbor that fits that model according to the mounting hole in the head, which can be fi 16 mm, 22, 27, 32, 40, and 60 mm.
