Ø15.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT2

Product description and key benefits

The Ø15.5 mm twist drill with an MT2 taper requires secure mounting in the spindle due to the cutting forces in structural steel. The self-holding Morse taper conforming to DIN 345 meets this requirement. The compact design of the Ø15.5 Morse taper drill reduces overhang and associated vibration.

Key benefits of the Ø15.5 mm metal drill bit

  • Secure MT2 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
  • HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
  • Flute length 120 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 110 mm thick without extensions
  • Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
  • Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
  • Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine

The Ø15.5 mm Morse taper drill is chosen for holes for bolted joints in machine components and steel structures. Maintenance departments use it to restore worn holes and drill new ones during assembly. Holes within tolerance class H12 (Ø15.500–Ø15.680 mm); tighter fits are achieved with a reamer.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 46 mm (3ר15.5), periodically retract the drill every 1–1.5×D to remove chips. Use ample emulsion cooling (minimum concentration of 6–8%). Reduce the feed by 30–50% from nominal values.

Material compatibility of the Ø15.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø15.5 mm drill bit

In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on uneven or inclined surfaces, where the drill may slip away from the marked point.

The HSS drill can be used for stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample cooling with a 8–10% emulsion. An HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is a more efficient option, retaining its hardness up to 650°C.

A pillar or box-column drilling machine with an MT2 spindle and a minimum power rating of 0.75–1.5 kW. Bench drilling machines with a drill chuck are not recommended — they cannot transmit the torque generated at a diameter of 15.5 mm.
