Ø24 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø24 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT3 taper operates in a diameter range where adequate rigidity of the spindle–tool system is required. At a diameter of 24 mm, the torque generated when cutting structural steel exceeds the capacity of a typical drill chuck — the Morse taper transmits it directly to the spindle. With a flute length of 160 mm, the Ø24 Morse taper drill allows drilling in plates and sections up to 145 mm thick.

Key benefits of the Ø24 mm metal drill bit

  • MT3 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 281 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 160 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 20 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT2 to MT4 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø24 Morse taper drill is used in machinery manufacturing and repair plants for holes in structural components with more demanding dimensional requirements. Typical applications: holes for M22–M30 bolts, seats for bushings and pins. H12 tolerance (Ø24.000–Ø24.210 mm); H7 requires reaming.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)

When drilling holes deeper than 72 mm (3ר24), use peck drilling with retraction every 1×D. Use ample emulsion coolant at a minimum concentration of 6–8%. Reduce the feed by 30–50%.

Material compatibility of the Ø24 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø24 mm drill bit

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.
