Ø31.5 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø31.5 mm HSS twist drill with an MT3 taper provides stable drilling of large-diameter holes in steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm². The MT3 Morse taper mounts directly in the spindle without intermediate clamping components, eliminating sources of radial runout. The Ø31.5 Morse taper drill can be used in setups with MT3→MT4 and MT3→MT5 reduction sleeves.

Key benefits of the Ø31.5 mm metal drill bit

  • MT3 taper — direct mounting — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of radial runout and tool slippage
  • HSS cutting edge, 63–65 HRC — hardness that ensures stable cutting of steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² throughout the interval between sharpenings
  • Right-hand helical flutes — effective chip evacuation from the cutting zone — essential when drilling holes deeper than 2×D
  • Compact 301 mm design — shorter tool overhang provides greater rigidity and less vibration
  • Repeated reconditioning — the HSS cutting edge can be resharpened 8–12 times while retaining its geometry — at l2 = 180 mm, the resharpening allowance is approximately 22 mm
  • Sleeve compatibility — use on drilling machines with MT2 to MT4 spindles using reduction sleeves

The Ø31.5 mm Morse taper drill is selected for holes for pins, bearing bushings, and flanged connections in machinery manufacturing. It is suitable for machining foundation plates and bearing end shields. H12 tolerance holes (Ø31.500–Ø31.750 mm); tighter fits are achieved by reaming or boring.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 31.5 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 63 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø31.5 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø31.5 mm drill bit

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.
