Ø30.25 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø30.25 mm twist drill with an MT3 taper becomes the only practical choice for stationary drilling machines in the 23–31 mm diameter range. A drill chuck cannot transmit the torque in this diameter range — the risk of slippage and reduced hole quality is too high. The design of the Ø30.25 Morse taper drill with an MT3 taper eliminates these problems.

Key benefits of the Ø30.25 mm metal drill bit

  • Direct mounting in an MT3 spindle — eliminates the drill chuck as a source of runout and slippage
  • Flute length 180 mm — drilling through holes in workpieces up to 165 mm thick in a single pass
  • DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — full interchangeability
  • Type N right-hand helical flutes — a compromise between web rigidity and flute capacity
  • h8 diameter fit — preliminary holes for reaming to H7 without additional boring
  • Extended tool life with emulsion cooling — coolant increases cutting edge life by up to a factor of 2.5 compared with dry drilling

The Ø30.25 Morse taper drill is used mainly in steel construction — industrial buildings, bridges, and viaducts — where holes with diameters of 23–31 mm are standard for assembly connections. In repair shops, it is used to restore holes in machinery. H12 tolerance (Ø30.250–Ø30.500 mm); H7 fits are achieved with a reamer.

Coolant selection for drilling diameters of 23–31 mm

At a diameter of 30.25 mm, the volume of chips removed is considerable — the helical flutes must evacuate a large amount of material. Use an emulsion at a concentration of 6–8% with a flow rate of at least 5 l/min. Without pressurized coolant, limit the depth of each pass to 60 mm.

Material compatibility of the Ø30.25 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø30.25 mm drill bit

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.

An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.

Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.
