Ø27.75 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT3

Product description and key benefits

The Ø27.75 mm NWKc twist drill with an MT3 taper operates in a diameter range where adequate rigidity of the spindle–tool system is required. At a diameter of 27.75 mm, the torque generated when cutting structural steel exceeds the capacity of a typical drill chuck — the Morse taper transmits it directly to the spindle. With a flute length of 170 mm, the Ø27.75 Morse taper drill allows drilling in plates and sections up to 155 mm thick.

Key benefits of the Ø27.75 mm metal drill bit

  • Morse taper MT3 — self-holding mounting in the spindle eliminates slipping under full cutting torque
  • HSS high-speed steel — the cutting edge retains its working hardness up to 600°C in structural and low-alloy steels
  • Full compliance with DIN 345 — ensures interchangeability and compatibility with reduction sleeves and Morse taper spindles
  • 118° point angle — versatile cutting geometry performs well in structural and medium-hard steels, cast iron, and aluminum
  • Diameter tolerance h8 — repeatable hole size within a tolerance class that ensures consistent parameters in series production
  • Resharpenable cutting edges — repeated sharpening on a grinder while maintaining the 118° angle and cutting edge symmetry

The Ø27.75 Morse taper drill is used to machine holes for flanged and pinned connections in heavy machinery components. At diameters in the MT3 range, the hole size is large enough to require power spindle feed. H12 tolerance, Ø27.750–Ø27.960 mm; fitted holes are achieved by reaming or boring.

Machine tool requirements

The Ø27.75 mm drill requires a drilling machine with at least 1.5 kW of power and a rigid pillar or box-column construction. Bench drilling machines do not provide sufficient rigidity — resulting in runout, vibration, and accelerated cutting edge wear.

Material compatibility of the Ø27.75 mm drill bit

Range of workpiece materials and application limitations

✓ Structural steel (S235, S355) up to 900 N/mm²
✓ Gray and ductile cast iron (GG20, GGG40)
✓ Low-carbon and medium-alloy steel
▲ Stainless steel (Vc reduced by 40%, ample coolant)
▲ Aluminum and Al alloys (emulsion coolant required)
✗ Hardened steels above 45 HRC

Frequently asked questions about the Ø27.75 mm drill bit

Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.

The HSS drill can handle stainless steel with Vc reduced by 40% and ample coolant. For regular INOX machining, an HSSE (cobalt) drill of the same diameter is recommended.

A pillar or box-column drill press with an MT3 spindle and a power rating of at least 1.5 kW. For diameters above 25 mm, power feed is recommended — manual feed will not provide uniform pressure.
