Ø5.4 mm HSS metal drill bit – Morse taper MT1
Product description and key benefits
The Ø5.4 mm NWKc twist drill combines two features important in everyday shop work: secure taper mounting and the ability to be resharpened repeatedly. The MT1 taper provides direct contact with the spindle — without play or slippage. With a flute length of 52 mm, the Ø5.4 Morse taper drill allows machining of workpieces of standard thicknesses, while the 118° point angle eliminates the need for preliminary spot drilling on flat surfaces.
Key benefits of the Ø5.4 mm metal drill bit
- Secure MT1 taper mounting — the self-holding taper conforming to DIN 345 transmits cutting torque without intermediate components — no drill chuck is required
- HSS steel resistant to temperatures up to 600°C — the cutting edge retains its working hardness at the cutting speeds recommended for structural steels and cast iron
- Flute length 52 mm — enables drilling through holes in components up to 42 mm thick without extensions
- Self-centering 118° geometry — eliminates spot drilling on flat surfaces — saves time in batch production
- Diameter tolerance class h8 — the predrilled hole is ready for reaming to H7 without an additional boring bar pass
- Full interchangeability according to DIN 345 — identical taper dimensions regardless of manufacturer — the drill can be replaced without adjusting the machine
The Ø5.4 Morse taper drill is suitable for series production of steel components, where repeatable hole dimensions determine assembly quality. With H12 tolerance at Ø5.400–Ø5.520 mm, holes require no additional machining for bolted connections. More precise fits are achieved with a finishing reamer.

Drilling blind holes
When drilling blind holes with the Ø5.4 mm drill, allow for the drill point cone — the usable depth is approximately 2 mm less than the set depth. For holes deeper than 16 mm (3×D), retract the drill every 8 mm to clear chips from the flutes.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø5.4 mm drill bit
The maximum drilling depth is the flute length l2 = 52 mm minus the drill point length (approximately 2 mm). The effective usable depth is therefore approximately 50 mm.
In S235/S355 structural steels, spot drilling is not necessary — the 118° angle provides self-centering. Spot drilling with an NC 90° drill is recommended when drilling on milled surfaces, castings with machining allowance, or difficult-to-machine materials.
A cooling and lubricating emulsion at a concentration of 5–8% is recommended. For stainless steels, increase the concentration to 8–10%. Cast iron can be drilled dry with compressed air to remove chips.
