The Ø28.5 mm metal drill bit with an MT3 Morse taper shank to DIN 345 belongs to the group of tools designed for machining medium- and large-diameter holes. At Ø28.5, type N flute geometry provides chip evacuation proportional to the volume of material being removed. The Ø28.5 Morse taper drill bit with a 118° point angle allows self-centering in steels with tensile strengths up to 900 N/mm² without spot drilling.

Deep-hole drilling (over 3×D)
When drilling holes deeper than 85 mm (3×Ø28.5), use peck drilling with retraction every 1×D. Use ample emulsion coolant at a minimum concentration of 6–8%. Reduce the feed by 30–50%.

Frequently asked questions about the Ø28.5 mm drill bit
An HSSE drill bit contains 5% cobalt, which increases heat resistance from 600°C to 650°C. The practical difference: HSSE performs much better in stainless and difficult-to-machine steels. When machining only carbon steels, the difference in tool life is minimal.
Use peck drilling: retract the drill every 1–1.5×D, clear chips from the flutes, and cool with a 6–8% emulsion. Reduce the feed by 30–50% from the nominal value.
Spot drilling is not necessary on flat surfaces in structural steels. Spotting with a 90° NC spotting drill is recommended when drilling on inclined surfaces, castings with machining allowance, and flame-cut surfaces.
